Plan International USA applauds the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), allowing some 700,000 children and young people to avoid deportation and retain their legal U.S. residency.

Plan International was founded in 1937 as a response to the Spanish Civil War, on the belief that people would see the children displaced by that conflict not as “war refugees,” but as children whose futures were in doubt. At the time, millions of Americans believed the same, demonstrating the values of the nation and embracing our common humanity. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to keep the protected status of a large and contributing group in American society reinforces a principle that is deeply American: welcoming and protecting vulnerable people.

With more than 80 years of experience partnering with young people and children around the world, providing them with the support and resources they and their communities need to ensure they achieve their full potential with dignity, opportunity and safety, Plan International USA celebrates the court’s decision.

It is in our country’s DNA to protect young people and children and give them the space to learn, lead, decide and thrive. Today’s decision certainly reinforces our values as Americans.
