Youth Leadership Academy

Plan International’s Youth Leadership Academy gives you the tools you need to create the change you want. We are investing in the next generation of young changemakers and advocates driving the change we want to see. Because young people are not just the future – they are the leaders of today.

The Plan International Youth Leadership Academy is a year-long social impact fellowship by youth, for youth, hosted by Plan USA’s Youth Advisory Board. It centers on the Leadership Project deliverable. Throughout the course of the year, each participant will ideate, design and implement their own local advocacy project related to gender equity. The DC residency will take place from July 20-24, 2026. Applications are due on June 10.

What is the Plan YLA?

The Plan Youth Leadership Academy is a yearlong program designed to help young activists take their leadership to the next level. Fellows attend a one-week, leadership training intensive in D.C. By the end of this week, Fellows will pitch their initial Leadership Project idea and plan, related to a gender equity social justice issue.

Then, in the school year that follows, participants will implement their Leadership Project in their local communities with support from one-on-one mentorship meetings, monthly project development workshops, micro-seed funding and more!

Your leadership project

Young people like you are some of the world’s best innovators, topic experts, coalition-builders, mobilizers and communicators. We believe that we can harness this power within young people across the country to make tangible change while continuing to learn and grow as leaders.

The Leadership Project is your opportunity to do so by leading your own gender equity social justice project. We will walk you through the process of project development including identifying a need or social issue, crafting your mission, analyzing stakeholders, pitching your project, securing funding and much more.

These are fundamental concepts and tools that not only create change in this year , but also carry throughout your future change-making, advocacy and professional careers.

Find out

Participating in Plan’s Youth Leadership Academy was the single greatest catalyst I had for my political and community involvement. Before this, I was aware of social issues and strongly believed in advocating for change, but wasn’t doing so myself. Through the work I did on my leadership development project, I began working with multiple climate organizations and getting involved with politics.
