WASHINGTON, DC —Today, Plan International USA (Plan) announced receipt of a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) award to address the urgent needs of 40 communities in El Salvador who were affected by tropical storm Amanda. The 3-month project, titled Emergency WASH Assistance for Communities Affected by Tropical Storm Amanda, launched July 20, 2020.
“El Salvador is currently being impacted by multiple crises,” said Dr. Tessie San Martin, President and CEO of Plan International USA. “COVID-19 coupled with tropical storm Amanda has severally impacted girls, children and families. This grant will provide critical items to those who need it most.”
The project aims to provide water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) assistance to more than 5,000 individuals in San Salvador, La Libertad and Chalatenango. This will include the distribution of hygiene kits, menstrual hygiene management kits and safe water kits. In addition, the project will raise awareness around hygiene promotion, safe handwashing practices, safe water storage, COVID-19 awareness and prevention, and prevention of mosquito-borne and gastrointestinal diseases.
Plan will work closely with community groups and community health workers to identify the most vulnerable families who have sustained damage to their homes, loss of jobs, crops or livestock, and damaged drinking water systems. This will include single parent homes, people with disabilities and child- or female-led families.
The grant totals $600,000 and will last through October 19, 2020.
