Nilinde Household Economic Strengthening
Nilinde (Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Nairobi and Coast Counties of Kenya) is a five-year USAID-funded project dedicated to improving the welfare and protection of children affected by HIV and AIDS.
Even though millions of dollars of donor funds are channeled through pro-poor programs to address the needs of children living in the poorest households in Kenya, the vast majority of the children are still in need of support — which raises questions regarding the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of conventional resilience-building program. Guided by these questions, and drawing on existing economic strengthening models, Nilinde developed a targeted approach based on individual household vulnerability.
This brief focuses on the approach and its outcomes to enabling children to be healthy, safe, stable and schooled.
