Michelle Van Akin

Disaster Risk Manager, Child Protection & Gender-Based Violence Specialist

Michelle Van Akin is a child protection in humanitarian action professional with more than five years of experience in child protection, protection, and gender-based violence programming. Michelle has experience working in emergency and protracted crisis settings in Jordan, Iraq, South Sudan and Myanmar. As a Disaster Risk Manager and Child Protection and Gender-based Violence (GBV) Specialist, at Plan International USA (Plan), she provides technical support to the Disaster Risk Management portfolio of donor-funded projects, with a specific focus on child protection and GBV programming. Michelle is also the co-lead of the Community-Level Child Protection Task Force of the Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action. Prior to joining Plan, she worked for Danish Refugee Council where she managed protection, child protection, and GBV programming in Rakhine State, Myanmar.

Michelle holds a M.A. in human rights and humanitarian action from Sciences Po in Paris and a B.A. in anthropology and international relations from Wheaton College in Massachusetts.
