Varshita Venkatesh
Girls’ Education Fund
In honor of Varshita Venkatesh and her passion for providing girls with access to education.
In her husband Venkatesh’s words, Varshita believed that the key to sustainable development was “women’s education, employability and ability to stand on their own two feet.”
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 130 million girls between the ages of 6 and 17 were out of school. Another 15 million girls of primary-school age — half of them in sub-Saharan Africa — were expected to never even enter a classroom.
Today, the problem is only getting worse. An estimated 89% of all students around the world are out of school due to COVID-19 closures, from primary schools to universities. That’s a total of 1.54 billion children and youth, including nearly 743 million girls.
